How to Prepare for DP-700: A Step-by-Step Study Guide
The DP-700 Fabric Data Engineer Associate certification is the most impactful certification if you work with data engineering in Microsoft Fabric. It covers a broad range of important skills including data ingestion, transformation, orchestration, security, monitoring, and performance optimization.
This certification is not an entry-level introduction to data engineering. To pass the exam, you are expected to understand a wide variety of data engineering concepts and know which tools to use for different scenarios. The scope is broad, and the topics are very practical. That's why instead of an endless list of resources, you need a structured plan.
Should you choose DP-700?
DP-700 is an especially good choice if you're working with data engineering or want to move into a Microsoft Fabric data engineering role. Some relevant roles include but are not limited to data engineer, data consultant, and data architect. The certification can also be useful even if your focus is on the analytics side as you gain more understanding of the end-to-end data flow.
However, if your main focus is Power BI, and analytics solutions, you should first consider DP-600 or PL-300. PL-300 focuses on working with Power BI when DP-600 covers how to build complete analytics solutions.
If you're completely new to data concepts or the Microsoft data ecosystem, DP-700 might be too advanced. In that case, I recommend starting with DP-900 which covers Azure data fundamentals.
What does DP-700 test?
As with other Microsoft exams, the topics are split into different core areas. DP-700 covers three areas with nearly equal weight:
Implement and manage an analytics solution (30-35%):
- Configure Microsoft Fabric workspace settings. Covers topics like Spark settings, domains, OneLake workspace settings, and Apache Airflow settings.
- Implement lifecycle management in Fabric. Covers topics like version control, database projects, and deployment pipelines.
- Configure security and governance. Covers workspace and item access, granular data access controls, dynamic data masking, sensitivity labels, endorsements, audit logs, and OneLake security.
- Orchestrate processes. Covers choosing between Dataflows Gen2, pipelines, and notebooks, configuring schedules and event-based triggers, and implementing orchestration patterns.
Ingest and transform data (30-35%):
- Design and implement loading patterns. Covers full and incremental loads, preparing data for dimensional models, and streaming data patterns.
- Ingest and transform batch data. Covers choosing data stores and transformation tools, OneLake shortcuts, mirroring, pipelines, PySpark, SQL, KQL, aggregations, denormalization, and handling problematic data.
- Ingest and transform streaming data. Covers streaming engines, Real-Time Intelligence, Eventstreams, Spark Structured Streaming, KQL, and windowing functions.
Monitor and optimize an analytics solution (30-35%):
- Monitor Fabric items. Covers monitoring ingestion, transformations, semantic model refreshes, and configuring alerts.
- Identify and resolve errors. Covers troubleshooting pipelines, Dataflows Gen2, notebooks, Eventhouses, Eventstreams, T-SQL, and OneLake shortcuts.
- Optimize performance. Covers optimizing Lakehouse tables, pipelines, Warehouses, Eventstreams, Eventhouses, Spark workloads, and query performance.

1. Book the exam and create a deadline
This is more important than people often realize. Changing your approach from "I'll take the exam when I'm ready" to "I'll take the exam in X weeks" creates a sense of urgency and makes it easier to build your weekly plan.
It's important to choose a realistic date that will push you to study, but doesn't overwhelm you. If you already work with Microsoft Fabric and can study consistently, 1-2 months may be a reasonable estimate. If Fabric or data engineering is new to you, give yourself more time. In the end, it heavily depends on how much time you can spend on studying.

2. Read the official study guide from beginning to end
Before diving into any actual learning content, read the official DP-700 study guide.
The official study guide always provides the latest comprehensive list of skills measured. You'll also find information about changes to the exam. The current skills measured are dated July 21, 2026.
The study guide is often overlooked, but it's the most important resource you need to pass the exam. It works as a checklist when getting started and again when finalizing your exam preparation. If you encounter a topic you've never heard of before, I recommend asking an LLM of your choice for a short high-level summary.
Below is an interactive PDF that can be used to map your current knowledge and track your progress. Each topic can be tagged as Comfortable, Familiar, or New. Remember to download a copy after filling out the form to save your changes.

3. Complete the official Microsoft Learn course
Next, complete the official Microsoft Learn course for DP-700. The course currently consists of five learning paths and 27 modules.
- Ingest data with Microsoft Fabric - 4 hours 49 minutes, 4 modules
- Implement a Lakehouse with Microsoft Fabric - 7 hours 21 minutes, 7 modules
- Implement Real-Time Intelligence with Microsoft Fabric - 5 hours 31 minutes, 5 modules
- Implement a data warehouse with Microsoft Fabric - 6 hours 38 minutes, 7 modules
- Manage a Microsoft Fabric environment - 3 hours 30 minutes, 4 modules
The estimated duration of going through the course is just under 28 hours. The estimate does not include stopping and taking notes, repeating hard sections, or reading the related documentation.
- Take notes to reinforce your learning

4. Watch Aleksi Partanen's 11-hour DP-700 course
After completing the Microsoft Learn course, watch Aleksi Partanen's free DP-700 Exam Full Course on YouTube.
The course is over 11 hours long and consists of 27 sections covering the major DP-700 topics. It combines explanations, slides, hands-on demonstrations inside Microsoft Fabric, and practice questions.
This is especially useful after completing Microsoft Learn. You should already recognize most of the topics, so you can focus on understanding how they connect and seeing the features used in practice.
- Take notes
- Pause or rewind when needed
- Try to answer practice questions before the answer is explained
- Return to the relevant Microsoft Learn module if a topic comes up you're not yet comfortable with

6. Go through the official study guide again
Now is the time to review what you've learned and identify the topics that still need attention. Return to the official DP-700 study guide or your PDF checklist if you chose to use it.
Go through the list again. For each topic, try to explain the fundamental concepts as if you were presenting them to someone else.
- Can you explain the topic in your own words?
- When would this feature or approach be useful?
- What alternatives are available?
DP-700 contains many areas where several tools can solve similar problems. Being able to compare those options is important.
Flag the topics that need more practice. That's what you're going to do next.
7. Get hands-on practice in Fabric Forge
You've studied the topics, tested your knowledge, and identified the areas that still need work. Now it's time to actually build things in Microsoft Fabric. The best way to prepare for scenario-based exam questions is to build things yourself.
Join Fabric Forge and use the hands-on exercises to practice working with Fabric features in realistic scenarios.
Fabric Forge focuses on learning by doing. Instead of only studying theory about tools and features, you're required to use them yourself.
Start with exercises in areas you flagged in the previous step. The goal is not to sprint through all the exercise. Instead, focus on what you're doing and why.
You can also revisit the Microsoft Learn exercises or build a small solution of your own. For example, ingest some data, transform it, orchestrate the process, configure access, and then monitor the solution.
There's no need to build a production-ready end-to-end platform. The important part is getting comfortable actually working inside Fabric.
8. Learn what to expect on exam day
Especially if this is your first Microsoft certification exam, watch this Microsoft Reactor session: Prepare for Exam Day.
Learning the technical content is the most important part of your preparation. However, going into an unfamiliar exam format can still catch you by surprise. You should understand the different question formats, how to manage your time, how to review your answers, and how to effectively use Microsoft Learn.

9. Take the official Microsoft Practice Assessment
Finish your preparation with the official Practice Assessment. Scroll down to DP-700 and you'll be able to access the assessment.
I strongly recommend saving this assessment for last. This is your final benchmark and gives you another opportunity to identify gaps before the real exam. The assessment is free and can be attempted multiple times.
Be advised that the question pool is limited. Repeating the assessment too quickly can turn it into a memory game. After each attempt you should:
- Carefully review wrong answers
- Read the relevant documentation
- Get more practice on topics that still need work
10. Time to take the exam
This is it. You've done the work. You've studied the topics, tested your knowledge, closed the gaps, and gained hands-on experience in Microsoft Fabric. Now it's time to take the exam. Trust your preparation and believe in yourself, and you'll do great!
